"How wonderful opera would be if there were no singers"
G. Rossini

Artist Bio
French contralto and violinist Ilia Marinescu is an artist driven by restless curiosity and a deep dedication to virtuosic vocal repertoire. After obtaining her diploma in violin studies in 2010, she transitioned to vocal training, earning her Master’s degree in 2022 from the MUK in Vienna under the guidance of Roberta Invernizzi.
She is currently furthering her specialization in the AVES program at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel and perfecting her repertoire in Milan with Gaëlle Meyer.
She just made her solo debut at the Wiener Staatsoper in the production Visionary Dances (Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms). Known for her "rare, dark timbre", she has performed on international stages such as the Philharmonie Luxembourg, Theater an der Wien, and the Wiener Konzerthaus, where she sang the title role in a Porpora oratorio.
Between 2023 and 2025, she was a member of BachWerkVokal Salzburg as an alto soloist, a collaboration that culminated in late 2025 with the release of a CD dedicated to the composer Francesc Valls.
Her artistic path has been enriched by masterclasses with legendary figures of the lyrical world, including Christa Ludwig, Leontina Vaduva, Pietro Spagnoli, and Theodor Guschlbauer.
While her background is rooted in the performance practice of the 16th and 17th centuries, Ilia’s work today is strongly oriented toward Belcanto and Rossinian contralto roles. Her technical agility and rhetorical nuance—refined through work with conductors such as René Jacobs—allow her to naturally navigate the vocal acrobatics and profound expressivity required by the repertoire of Gioachino Rossini.
